Lulu Sakamoto is a technical designer based in Tokyo and New York City and was educated in both Tokyo and New York.
Born in Hokkaido, Lulu moved Tokyo in her early 20's to pursue her dream of becoming a singer. After a few years of hard work, she met her future boss at one of her side jobs. Although she expected to continue her singing career, he encouraged her to consider working in the fashion industry. Within three years, Lulu had produced thousands of styles and best sellers for the company and was quickly promoted to chief designer. To her making garments and creating music had many similarities in that they both required combining a variety of different parts and putting them together.
Not long after, Lulu established her own company, Gorgeous- a full service design, pattern making and manufacturing company in Tokyo, Japan. She was at the height of her success when she started researching sustainability and the environment and wondered whether the fashion industry could ever be sustainable. She came to a point where she even wondered whether she should continue working in fashion. Before making any big changes or decisions, she attended some courses at F.I.T. about sustainable fashion and thankfully learned about ways fashion could be kind to the environment. She started with small changes like moving to more environmentally friendly manufacturers and using more sustainable fabrics.
She continues to educate herself on new trends and other ways to make less if an impact on the environment. She now believes that it's through these small changes that she and others can start to make bigger changes for our planet and our future.
